Game of Thrones Could Finally Address Old Wounds With New Sequel Series

November has been a busy month for Game of Thrones fans, with major updates about the franchise and its expanding universe. In just the last few days, HBO has announced renewals for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, giving fantasy fans plenty to celebrate.

Both prequels are now confirmed through 2028 — an excellent sign for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a well-earned continuation for House of the Dragon, which has played a crucial role in rebuilding the Game of Thrones brand after the widely criticized finale. But the biggest surprise may be what's coming next: Game of Thrones could finally receive a sequel series.

HBO Is Officially Developing Game of Thrones Sequels

During a panel at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, George R.R. Martin revealed that HBO is developing “a sequel or two” for Game of Thrones — more than anyone expected. While he didn’t offer details about the plots or characters involved, Martin confirmed these follow-up shows are in active development.

He mentioned House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the upcoming Aegon the Conqueror prequel but remained cryptic about what exactly the sequels will explore.

Why Game of Thrones Sequels Are the Only Real Fix for Season 8

Many viewers felt the cracks in Game of Thrones began as early as season 5, but season 8 became the lightning rod for nearly every criticism — rushed pacing, incomplete character arcs, and abrupt plot resolutions.

A sequel series could finally give these storylines the attention they deserved:

  • What kind of king did Bran become?

  • What happened to Jon Snow beyond the Wall?

  • Where did Arya go after heading “west of Westeros”?

  • How did Sansa rule the North as Queen?

Season 8 moved at breakneck speed, leaving many choices unexplained. Why was Bronn appointed Master of Coin? Why didn’t the Iron Islands receive independence like the North? And why was Jon banished when the Unsullied left Westeros shortly after?

A sequel could answer these lingering questions and give characters the narrative closure the finale failed to deliver. Whether set immediately after season 8 or years later, it would go a long way in repairing the finale’s reputation.

But HBO Won’t Remake Game of Thrones Season 8

Despite fan petitions, HBO is extremely unlikely to remake season 8. Anyone holding out hope for a redo may be waiting as long as those expecting The Winds of Winter any day now.

That said, franchises have surprised us before — the Harry Potter reboot being a recent example. While nothing is impossible, it’s far more realistic that HBO will continue addressing the show’s shortcomings through new prequels and sequels rather than revisiting the original storyline.
